FRIESENRIED – OUR BAVARIAN “TWIN TOWN”
The Friends of Friesenried Association
The link with Friesenried was first established in 1981 when the Friesenried Town Council applied, through the British Council in London, for a possible twinning with a small town or village in the Norfolk area. At that time both Friesenried and North Walsham Councils decided not to formalise the twinning because of the expenses this could involve and so an unofficial link between the two communities was formed.
However, after a few highly successful exchanges this decision was reversed and in 1991 the official Twinning Charters were signed in both Britain and Germany and we are proud that in 2011 we celebrated our 30th anniversary. Many more exchanges have taken place and as you read this it can be guaranteed that a further visit is in its planning stages. Needless to say, over the past years many lasting friendships have been formed between families.
Friesenried is a small village in Bavaria, about 60 miles south of Munich, and less than an hour by car from the foothills of the Alps. In fact a trip to/up a mountain is usually one of the highlights of our visit. Life is very different there with Friesenried being the largest of a group of villages in a very peaceful and pastoral area. Life is centred on the Family, Church and school.
New members are always welcome and in fact needed to keep this unique link alive. We hold several social functions each year plus a couple of fundraising events where we get to know each other. This helps us provide a welcoming group for our visitors when they arrive. Annual visits occur between both towns where guests stay with host families, many of whom have already formed lasting friendships through past exchanges and certainly new friendships will be formed. A programme of events is planned by both Associations.
If you would like something completely different, great fun and a new experience to see another part of the world, then you are invited to apply for membership. An information pack is available from the Mrs. Foster, Hon.Secretary, c/o North Walsham Town Council.
